Sage, Rosemary and Juniperberry Infusion
(Salvia officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis and Jun)
Sage oil comes from the common sage (Salvia officinalis), which belongs to a large genus covering 900 species. We also use its relative clary sage (S. sclarea).
Sage is a shrubby, evergreen perennial herb with much branched stems and wrinkled, velvety, grey-green leaves about 2 inches long. Spikes of violet to purple, pink or white flowers appear in summer.
Sage is antiseptic and astringent and helps control sweating. It is stimulating and cleansing to the skin and scalp, and soothing to sore muscles. Sage is an antioxidant due to the presence of phenolic acids. Powdered sage is a superb addition to any deodorant.
Rosemary is an evergreen shrub, and may grow up to six feet tall. It has green, needle-like leaves and purple flowering tops. It is native to the Mediterranean and belongs to the Labiatae family. Depending on the local climate, it may bloom all year. Rosmarinus officinalis is also known as sea rose, compass plant and Mary’s tree. Leaves and flowering tops are collected in spring and early summer. They are distilled for oil, or dried for infusions, decoctions, extracts, spirits, and tinctures.
Rosemary is rich in volatile oils, flavonoids and phenolic acids, which are antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Externally it is used to help relax muscles, and for dandruff. Rosemary is used on the hair and skin and in bath products.
Juniper bushes can be found in Canada, Hungary, France and Spain. This evergreen shrub grows up to 6 metres tall. It has dark green or blue needles and small flowers and berries. The berries change colour over the first few years of growth. They start off green, but after a year or two, they turn black.
Juniper berries are known to be antiseptic.
We make an infusion of sage, rosemary and juniper berries by adding them to boiled water.
